In order to have perpetuity in the program, we believe that there is a need to create an endowment fund, where the principal remains intact and the scholarships are met from the interest generated. However, to have a long term as well as immediate impact, the fund is structured such that it is part expendable and part endowed. We have the goal of setting up an endowment of $250,000 within the next two years.

2014 was an incredibly successful year for fundraising thanks to the following donors who made their valuable contributions during the year. Their support is helping to provide financial assistance to a record number of 76 needy but academically bright students of UVCE in 2014.

Scholarship Award Ceremony 2014-15

Fundraising efforts in India and United States of America

We are extremely encouraged that the response to this program has been incredible with many alumni pledging their support. It has been especially gratifying that alumni in the US came forward in a fundraiser event in July 2013 to contribute over $ 11,000 —a success that would not have been possible without the generosity of our alumni community. Alumni in India have similarly contributed generously to help raise almost INR 7 lakhs in 2013.

In order to have perpetuity in the program, we believe that there is a need to create an endowment fund, where the principal remains intact and the scholarships are met from the interest generated. However, to have a long term as well as immediate impact, the fund is structured such that it is part expendable and part endowed. In 2013 the Foundation is able to give away scholarships to a record 78 students. The scholarship program began last year by supporting 32 students in 2012. One of the scholars Lakshmi of 3rd semester Civil Engineering said “I am truly grateful to UVCE foundation for giving me the scholarship two years in a row which is giving all of us, recipients of this scholarship, a bright source of light in our lives. The criteria for selection were the financial need, family conditions and the academic merit of the candidate. As UVCE draws toward its Centenary in 2017, the alumni want to do their bit to give back to the institution that is the start of their professional life. The goal of the program is to have a sustained annual scholarship award for 150 students of UVCE from socio-economically disadvantaged backgrounds by the year 2015.

Our heartfelt thanks to everyone who supported this cause.”

Jointly organized by the UVCE Foundation and the Rotary Bangalore South, the Award ceremony was held on at the SIR MV Auditorium, KEB Association Building, Anand Rao Circle, Bangalore. It provided a great opportunity for the 78 student scholarship recipients, along with their parents and other family members, to meet some of the scholarship donors and to thank the Foundation volunteers for their work in raising these funds. Some of the students spoke on stage expressing their utmost gratitude for the support, and sharing their honest stories and their aspirations for the future. The UVCE Foundation, under the Foundation’s Scholarship Program, distributed need-based scholarships to 33 students across all branches of BE at UVCE for the 2012–13 academic year. The scholarships were largely possible due to the generosity of our well-wishers, donors and sponsors.

The Program provides annual scholarships to selected full time engineering undergraduate students at UVCE. Scholars receive up to full tuition fee support for their course with provision for performance-and-need-based extension to four years. Scholarships are awarded through a process of due diligence by the scholarships committee, followed by interviews of potential scholars by a high-level committee that recommends the quantum of scholarship to the recipient.

The program, made possible by donations to the UVCE Foundation Scholarship Fund by alumni and well-wishers, has awarded scholarships of Rs. 3, 57,000 in its inception year. To each and everyone who has helped raise funds for the Program, the Foundation sincerely thanks you for your efforts, contribution and unrelenting support.

The scholarship program has set itself a lofty goal of providing scholarships to 120-150 students within the next four years. We take this opportunity to appeal to our alumni and friends for their valuable support in establishing an endowment for this cause.

Process of selection of the 2012-13 scholarship awards

UVCE Foundation received over 200 applications from the currents students of UVCE for the scholarship. After a detailed analysis of the applications and interaction with the candidates by the scholarship team, 32 students were shortlisted for personal evaluation by the Scholarships Review Committee.

A seven-member high-level Committee headed by Mr B V Jagadeesh, (’78 batch alumnus) highly regarded US-India entrepreneur and Chairman of UVCE Foundation US, interacts with each candidate at an interview session held at the UVCE Alumni Association Hall, K R Circle, Bangalore on December 8, 2012. Careful consideration of the financial need, personal conditions and the academic merit of the candidate was part of the due diligence for the awarding of the scholarship. Based on due diligence, the committee recommended scholarships of full, half or one-third tuition fee assistance to 33 applicants, for the academic year 2012-13. The scholarships were evenly distributed across all departments under UVCE.

Scholarship award ceremony

Over 150 UVCE alumni and guests convened at the Jnana Jyothi Auditorium, Bangalore on February 25, 2013, to celebrate this year’s UVCE Foundation Scholarships. The celebration was jointly hosted by the Rotary Club, Bangalore South and the UVCE Foundation. The Bangalore University Vice-Chancellor, Dr Thimme Gowda graced the occasion as Chief Guest with Dr. V K Aatre, eminent scientist and former Scientific Advisor to the Ministry of Defense, our Guest of Honour.

In his keynote address on the occasion, Mr B V Jagadeesh stressed the importance of UVCE’s alumni to be more involved in the activities of the revered institution and to contribute through ideas, support and encouragement in making the current day students as successful as UVCE’s alumni.

The evening witnessed the awarded scholars, narrating their personal journeys through economic hardships during formative years, overcoming great odds in life to achieve academic success. The scholars’ expression of gratitude on the award and their view on their future, hopes and aspirations were moving and displayed maturity beyond their years. Supporting the cause of such scholars is in itself an acknowledgement of the effort of the innumerable contributors from the alumni and the UVCE Foundation.

The occasion was an opportunity for the alumni to come together to felicitate fellow alum, Dr Roddam Narasimha, on being awarded the Padma Vibhushan, the second-highest civilian honour bestowed by the Government of India for exemplary contribution to the country. The event provided an opportunity for guests to fraternize with each other and for the donors, alumni and recipients to exchange ideas to further shape the future.

Meet our inspiring fundraiser

Mrs Saroja Rao

There is no way to fully express our gratitude to Mrs Saroja V Rao,82 for her generous gesture to raise funds for the UVCE Foundation Scholarship Program. Mother of Mr B V Jagadeesh (Alumnus of ’78), co-founder of Exodus Inc. and Managing Partner KAAJ Ventures, Mrs Saroja made a heartwarming speech to the Inner-Wheel, the women’s wing of Rotary Bangalore South while proposing a project by the Rotary to support our cause.

Her hand-written speech is reproduced here to share her sincere and earnest appeal and to inspire our readers. To ensure a better response in raising funds for the cause, Mrs Rao also appealed to other UVCE alumni known to her and ensured the Fund’s growth.

Her unassuming gesture truly made a difference in the lives of the students we serve. While it helped us in reaching our fundraising goal for this year, beyond the monetary value, the cause benefitted through the wealth of her blessings. We at the Foundation wish her long and healthy life and are inspired by her actions to help more such students through our Scholarship Program.
